About the Club

Club History

From nine holes to eighteen — over a century of golf in the shadow of the Galtee Mountains.

Est. 1910

A course of two parts

Founded in 1910, Mitchelstown Golf Club lived a quiet and genteel life as a nine-hole golf course for the better part of seventy years. In the late eighties, as the Irish economy and society was entering a new phase, it became apparent that the club needed to look forward.

Being surrounded on all sides by valuable farming land, the move to an eighteen-hole course was not straightforward in financial terms. The step forward was accomplished in two stages — six new holes opening in 1994, followed by a further six in 2003. The dream of a full eighteen-hole course had been realised.

Both stages of the development were designed by David Jones of Bangor, Northern Ireland — a touring professional on both the European Tour and Seniors Tour who has designed seventeen courses across Ireland, Finland, Turkey, Kenya and Tanzania.

"A course of two parts: the newer holes spill across an open hillside while the older holes work between big trees and a river. A few cracking holes, of which the 14th and 15th are thrilling and the par four 4th is superb, with a long second shot into a deep dell of trees, across the River Funcheon."
Kevin Markham, author of "Hooked" — Irish Golf Writer & Photographer, January 2015

In 2011, the Munster branch of the GUI voted Mitchelstown Golf Club Munster Club of the Year, in recognition of the progress made by the club and the achievements of the Junior Cup team in winning the All Ireland Championship.
